You’ve come to the right place! Genealogy Starter is a launch pad into family research. Developed to guide novice genealogists, we’ll help you learn more about your family than you have ever known. It’s easier than you thought–and we help you do as much as possible for free! Using the tips and resources on GenealogyStarter.com, you’ll quickly find information about dozens–even hundreds–of ancestors and relatives.
Here are some step-by-step guidelines to maximize the effectiveness of your family history research:
- Before you begin: Learn the basics and put together a game plan for your research, including what to record and how to record it. Don’t spin your wheels hunting information before you know what you’re after!
- Easy pickins: Focus your initial efforts on readily-available and productive online resources. You’ll be surprised how much information you can find online without leaving home! Be sure you’ve interviewed your family members and searched free census and SSDI records before purchasing access to expensive services or heading off to the library.
- Diggin’ deep: When you’re ready to start expanding your research and searching for information that isn’t so easy to find, you’ll need to find all sorts of new sources. These sources will be any combination of hard to find, far away or expensive. Research how to research before you break your back!
- Get unstuck: The only way to avoid getting stuck is to choose another hobby before you begin. (But even then, it’s not a guarantee.) When you get stuck, take Lombardi’s advice and get “back to basics”. Sometimes we get so focused on our tasks at hand that we forget to take a step back and look for the easy answers. Fortunately, there are several genealogy tools available to make suggestions.
Also be sure to browse the surnames database!
